Happy Birthday, Aishwarya

1 November 2026

A story of a girl, a dream, and a light that keeps on growing.

Every great film begins with a single frame.
This one begins by the sea.

Chapter I · 1973

A Girl by the Sea

On the first of November 1973, in the coastal city of Mangaluru, a little girl was born into a Tulu family, in a town where the Arabian Sea hums all day and the evenings are gold.

Words came easily to her. Tulu, Hindi and English were hers from childhood, and Marathi and Tamil would follow. Nobody could have known it yet, but one day she would speak to the whole world in all of them.

Born 1 November 1973 Mangaluru, Karnataka

Chapter II · Mumbai

Books, Bharatanatyam & Big Dreams

When her father's work took the family to Mumbai, the girl from the coast became a city student: first at Arya Vidya Mandir, then a year at Jai Hind College, and then D. G. Ruparel College in Matunga, where she earned 90 per cent in her Higher Secondary examinations.

Her favourite subject was zoology, and for a while she thought about becoming a doctor. For five years in her teens she trained in classical dance and music and fell in love with Bharatanatyam. That poise would one day carry her across the grandest stages in the world.

  • Zoology favourite subject
  • 5 years classical dance & music
  • 90% in HSC

Chapter III · The early nineties

The Architect of Her Own Story

She once planned to design buildings. At the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture she studied line, light and proportion, and those lessons never really left her.

Then the camera found her. As a ninth-grader she had already appeared in a commercial for Camlin pencils. Soon some of Mumbai's best photographers were calling, and in 1993 one shy line in a Pepsi commercial, "Hi, I'm Sanjana", had the whole country saying her name.

She did not stop being an architect.
She began to build a life.

Chapter IV · 1994

A Crown in Sun City

At Femina Miss India 1994 she was crowned Miss India World, and she won five special titles along the way: Miss Catwalk, Miss Miraculous, Miss Photogenic, Miss Perfect Ten and Miss Popular.

Then, on 19 November 1994 in Sun City, South Africa, 87 young women from around the globe gathered for the final. At the end of the night the 21-year-old architecture student from Bombay was crowned Miss World, only the second Indian woman ever to wear that crown. The photographers voted her Miss Photogenic too.

Asked what her first goal as Miss World would be, she answered: "compassion for the underprivileged."

Reported by the Associated Press, 20 November 1994

Her reign took her around the world in the spirit of the pageant's motto, Beauty with a Purpose. It was a purpose she would keep.

Chapter V · 1997

Lights. Camera. Iruvar.

In 1997 she stepped in front of the camera for Mani Ratnam in the Tamil film Iruvar. It was a dual role, Pushpavalli and Kalpana, in a film that went on to win Best Film at the Belgrade International Film Festival.

Her Hindi debut came the same year and won her the Screen Award for Best Female Debut. In 1998 S. Shankar's Jeans, the most expensive Indian film of its day, became India's official entry to the Academy Awards. The girl from the sea had found her stage.

Year after year since then, as a global ambassador for L'Oréal Paris, she has walked those famous steps and greeted the photographers with her signature namaste.

In 2025 she chose a handwoven ivory Kadwa Banarasi saree by Manish Malhotra and took India's handloom heritage onto cinema's most famous carpet. In 2026, at the festival's 79th edition, she arrived in a sea-blue Amit Aggarwal gown that had taken more than 1,500 hours of handwork.

Where the Heart Sings

On 20 April 2007 she married Abhishek Bachchan, and that same year audiences watched the two of them together in Mani Ratnam's Guru. In November 2011 their daughter, Aaradhya, arrived. Of motherhood she has said simply that it "surpasses everything."

A Taste of Home

She has eaten at the world's finest tables, but ask her for the perfect meal and her answer is wonderfully simple:

"Basic food cooked by my mother. Very basic. Simple rice, dal, maybe a fish or a chicken curry made by my mother."

In conversation with Sir David Frost, Al Jazeera

And for a girl from Mangaluru, a Mangalorean fish curry with steamed rice is the taste of the coast she was born on.

Chapter XI · Now

Still Rising

With Ponniyin Selvan in 2022 and 2023 she gave us Nandini, a Chola queen whom critics hailed as some of the finest work of her career, in one of the biggest Tamil films ever made.

In 2026 she became a global brand ambassador for JW Marriott and returned to Cannes once more. She has always chosen her roles with care. "I'd rather look before I leap," she once said, and the light in her work keeps growing.

Some stories peak.
Hers keeps unfolding.
